SKA-SADT Business Case
Description | The PrepSKA project at the University of Manchester continued some of the work started in the SKADS project (Square Kilometre Array Design Study): antenna arrays for mid-frequency aperture arrays, digital array development, and approaches to high bandwidth data transport and picosecond level synchronisation over optical fibre networks. The PrepSKA project at the University of Manchester was vital in putting Manchester in a position to lead the Signal and Data Transport Consortium in the pre-construction phase of the Square Kilometre Array. This consortium which now includes staff from the PrepSKA team is designing the entire data transmission, synchronisation and timing systems and control/monitoring networks for this international project. |
Exploitation Route | See above - University of Manchester now lead one of the key design consortia for the Square Kilometre Array |
Sectors | Aerospace Defence and Marine Digital/Communication/Information Technologies (including Software) Electronics |
Description | The PrepSKA project has been a contribution to the international development of the Square Kilometre Array, to be built in Australia and South Africa. As a global multi-billion dollar project on an unprecedented scale a significant number of non-academic impacts are expected in terms of technologies and public engagement in science. |

PI Contribution | The work done in PrepSKA was key in laying the foundations, establishing the capabilities forging the relationships for the University of Manchester team to lead the international design consortia for Signal and Data Transport for the Square Kilometre Array, non-imaging processing and to play important roles in low frequency array design. The Universities of Oxford and Cambridge in the UK together with Manchester are the leading institutes of the UK SKA partnership. These contributions are important for the UK's membership of what will be an Inter-Governmental Organisation, formed by Treaty in 2018/9 with ~11 member states. |
