Astrophysics and Cosmology - Sussex Consolidated Grant

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sussex
Department Name: Sch of Mathematical & Physical Sciences

Abstract

This proposal seeks funds to continue an extensive programme of research into extragalactic astrophysics and cosmology, by addressing some of the most pressing astronomical questions of our time, such as "What are the fundamental constituents of the Universe?", "What is the nature of inflation and dark energy, believed to drive accelerated expansion in the early and late universe", "What processes govern the formation of the largest objects and structure in our universe?, and "how do galaxies form and evolve"? We will do this by combining theoretical work, much of it using high-performance computers, with multi-wavelength observational surveys. We will apply advanced techniques for making numerical predictions, data analysis and modelling, and deploy our skills through a series of international projects.

The research consists of ten varied but interconnected projects, each involving one or more faculty members and researchers, that can be collected into three broad themes: Early and late universe cosmology; Galaxy simulation and modelling; Galaxy and cluster observations. In summary:

Early and late universe cosmology: a series of projects will address theoretical predictions and observational constraints on inflation, dark energy and large scale structure. A particular focus of our work is the use of non-Gaussianity as an observational probe. We will be making new detailed predictions for large-scale structure non-Gaussiannity shapes from inflation and defects, and also study in detail a series of non-linear effects that are known to be important even if there is no primordial signal. This work will advance knowledge in how to extract information about new physics from cosmological observations as well as enabling precision studies of the late universe. These projects exploit STFC involvement in the Planck Surveyor Satellite and the COSMOS supercomputer.

Galaxy simulation and modelling: we will use new Petascale computing facilities to carry out detailed studies of the formation and evolution of the first structures, and make statistical predictions that can be used in the exploitation of new observational facilities such as LOFAR, ALMA and SKA. As well as detailed reionization and galaxy modelling, we will also use simulations and semi-analytic models to simulate sky data to optimize techniques for signal extraction, in particular for our involvement with Euclid.

Galaxy and cluster observations: We will use the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) database to resolve various questions about dwarf galaxies, such as where they are formed, and the star formation rate varies. Using data from VISTA-VIDEO and HerMES surveys we will answer questions about the different forces at play in star formation and galaxy activity. Using observations from Herchel and ALMA we will study the formation of stars in the early universe, exploiting simulations of galaxy populations to make predictions for detailed comparison. Using data from the Dark Energy Survey, we will develop a new catalogue of galaxy clusters that we will use to measure a fundamental cosmological parameter, the amplitude of matter fluctuations.

Planned Impact

There are three main strands to the expected impact of the astronomy research we carry out at Sussex.

The first strand is through the communication of the science results themselves. This is of benefit to the general public. Specifically: local and national news and documentary audiences, science festival attendees (notably at the Brighton science festival), theatre and cinema goers, popular science book readers and school children, school teachers, local community. These groups benefit either through a cultural enrichment and/or through increased awareness and understanding of science issues.

The second is through the development and utilisation of new and innovative statistical and computational methodologies that we will transfer from astronomy to other socio economic areas of impact. Specific beneficiaries are expected to include: people living with Cystic Fibrosis or Alzheimer's disease who would benefit from enhanced health and well being through applications of improved statistical techniques to improve diagnosis and treatment methods. People in areas affected by flooding would benefit from improved environmental impact reduction through new computational models for water flow. There is also the potential benefit to the local and national economy through the commercialisation and exploitation of these techniques perhaps through spin out companies.

The third strand is a benefit to the local and national economy (e.g. the health service, the finance industry, IT sector and education) through the training of skilled people for non-academic professions.

Description Research into Cosmology and Extragalactic Astrophysics:

With the Planck 2015 team we have produced the best full-sky lensing reconstruction and likelihood, measured cosmological parameters to unprecedented precision and placed the best limits on primordial gravitational waves. We also released new and updated public codes for MCMC sample analysis and sample generation, made a first detection of CMB polarization delensing.

We have shown how a theoretical model of galaxy formation, built on top of a large simulation of the growth of cosmic structure, can explain the observed distribution and properties of galaxies across cosmic time. That model highlights the importance of accretion of matter onto supermassive black holes for limiting the growth of the largest galaxies. High redshift galaxies can explain the reionisation of the Universe provided that emission from binary star systems is properly accounted for.

We have helped to design, run and analyse EAGLE, that simulates galaxy formation through to the present day. It provides the most accurate representation of galaxy formation and evolution over cosmic history to date and is a vital tool to test galaxy formation models.

We have also helped to design, run and analyse BLUETIDES, one of the largest (by particle number) hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation ever attempted. The BLUETIDES project has simulated the formation and evolution of galaxies through the first billion years of the Universe's history. It provides excellent agreement with existing observational constraints making it the ideal model on which to make predictions for the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope.

We performed the first ever realistic simulations of ultra-compact minihaloes, clumps of dark matter gravitationally bound into tight clumps. We showed that their densities were not nearly as large as previously expected, which changes our picture of how the first dense structures formed through gravitational attraction.

The Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey is compiling spectroscopic and multi-wavelength imaging observations for a representative and highly complete sample of galaxies in the nearby Universe. This survey is being used to understand how galaxies form and evolve, and to constrain the properties of the principal constituents of the Universe. To date, the GAMA survey has produced 138 papers with 4041 citations (h-index of 30).

We developed the first simulations to self-consistently evolved both the radiation field and gas to constrain the halo baryon fraction during cosmic reionization, deriving the corresponding characteristic mass for halos with baryon fraction half of the cosmic mean. We showed for the first time that the earliest stages of reionization could be directly imaged by the Square Kilometre Array. We have also found that the redshifted 21-cm signal from the X-ray heating Epoch (z>12) exhibits characteristic strongly non-gaussian features, which should aid detection.

We published the first joint X-ray optical paper on clusters from the dark energy survey (DES), plus a test of gravity on large scales. Major achievements by the Dark Energy Survey in the last 12 months include the publication of the first combined probe cosmology results, the EM confirmation of the first binary neutron star collision, and the public release of 5000 sq. degrees of multi-band photometry.

We were sent a poem afterwards

Dark Matter

You are a constellation of dark matter
An utterance in a vast and sprawling universe
Your potential by nature infinite
But blue-red eyes filter out the light

A trillion black holes
Little whirlpools filling the expanse
Bringing light to consciousness
Like a trillion whirring cogs

A pointillist picture
With the points in constant motion
Superimposing upon one another
Seemingly unaware of each other's presence

Yet

Creating a whole.
