Description | The Cockcroft Institute carries out research across a broad range of activities in charged particle accelerator science and technology. Numerous contributions have been made to this field and to various national and international accelerator facilities by scientists and engineers working in the Institute and supported by this award, and over 200 papers in refereed journals have been published which describe these contributions. The scientific highlights encompass milestones such as the construction and scientific exploitation of the ALICE, EMMA and VELA accelerator test facilities at Daresbury, as well as important contributions to the luminosity upgrade for CERN's Large Hadron Collider, the European Spallation Sources (ESS) in Sweden and the muon anomalous magnetic moment experiment at Fermilab in the USA. |
Exploitation Route | Much of the current research is ongoing and will continue along clearly defined paths. Opportunities are being sought to address global challenges in health, security, energy, environment and manufacturing. |

Description | The Cockcroft Institute operates a very extensive and stimulating programme of public engagement activities, involving schools, families and the general public. Through a broad range of events, our staff share with the public the many exciting developments in the field and the science that it enables. The Institute is also involved with local hospitals in developing proton beam therapy facilities for cancer patients and is also in partnerships with several large businesses looking at the applications of compact particle accelerators for cargo scanning. |

Results and Impact | In the past 2 years more than 20 events have taken place and since the start of this award we estimate that there may have been well over 50 of them. They include public lectures, schools visits, lab tours and demonstrations, and participation in national events such as the Big Bang Show and the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibitions. These events have stimulated numerous questions and discussions, and feedback from schools and the general public indicates growing interest in accelerator science and technology. |
