Abstract
The Cockcroft Institute proposes to : (i) perform generic and blue-sky research and development (R&D), spearheading the next bold steps in the conception of particle accelerators in the service of particle, nuclear, photon and neutron sciences; (ii) perform project specific R&D in Accelerator Science and Technology on large scale scientific facilities in UK or abroad approved nationally and internationally such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, TeV scale Electron-Positron Linear Collider, Neutrino Factories and Muon Colliders, High Luminosity Meson Factories, Superconducting Heavy Ion Linear Accelerators for Nuclear Physics such as HIE-ISOLDE at CERN, facilities for Anti-matter research such as FAIR; next generation photon sources such as the NLS and next generation neutron sources such as the ESS and ISIS upgrades; (iii) lead and manage national deliverables to international projects such as the luminosity upgrades of the Large Hadron Collider, Damping Rings and Positron Sources for the TeV scale electron-positron collider, the International Design Study of a Neutrino factory; potential accelerator systems for the FAIR project; (iv) spearhead novel collider and accelerator concepts to probe deeper into the nature of matter such as the Large Hadron-electron Collider (LHeC) at CERN; (v) explore the fundamental limits of particle acceleration gradient, coldest charged particle beams and the brightest beams achievable in the laboratory; (vi) advance the frontier of technology in meta-materials, lasers, plasmas and photonics for the next generation of particle accelerators; (vii) develop internationally acknowledged and competitive expertise, core competencies and complementary skills base in UK; (viii) implement Knowledge Exchange with industry and society, serving as a National Accelerator Development Centre addressing current issues in Energy (alternative energy sources such as Accelerator Driven Subcritical Reactors), Environment (Artificial Transmutation of Waste) and Health (accelerators for particle beam cancer therapy); (ix) integrate seamlessly academia, national research facilities and industry via incubation; (x) educate and train the next generation of enabling scientists and engineers for UK.

Description | The Cockcroft Institute carries out research across a broad range of activities in charged particle accelerator science and technology. Numerous contributions have been made to this field and to various national and international accelerator facilities by scientists and engineers working in the Institute and supported by this award, and over 200 papers in refereed journals have been published which describe these contributions. The scientific highlights encompass milestones such as the construction and scientific exploitation of the ALICE, EMMA and VELA accelerator test facilities at Daresbury, as well as important contributions to the luminosity upgrade for CERN's Large Hadron Collider, the European Spallation Sources (ESS) in Sweden and the muon anomalous magnetic moment experiment at Fermilab in the USA. |
Exploitation Route | Much of the current research is ongoing and will continue along clearly defined paths. Opportunities are being sought to address global challenges in health, security, energy, environment and manufacturing. |

Description | The Cockcroft Institute operates a very extensive and stimulating programme of public engagement activities, involving schools, families and the general public. Through a broad range of events, our staff share with the public the many exciting developments in the field and the science that it enables. The Institute is also involved with local hospitals in developing proton beam therapy facilities for cancer patients and is also in partnerships with several large businesses looking at the applications of compact particle accelerators for cargo scanning. |

Results and Impact | In the past 2 years more than 20 events have taken place and since the start of this award we estimate that there may have been well over 50 of them. They include public lectures, schools visits, lab tours and demonstrations, and participation in national events such as the Big Bang Show and the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibitions. These events have stimulated numerous questions and discussions, and feedback from schools and the general public indicates growing interest in accelerator science and technology. |
