PI Contribution | The outer layers of the solar atmosphere give off a continuous but highly variable stream known as the solar wind. Beyond sorne tens of solar radii this wind is essentially a fully ionised, collision-free plasma that carries with it the solar magnetic field. The wind's interaction with the bodies it meets (planets, comets, etc-) depends on the properties of those bodies, their atmospheres and magnetospheres. ln anticipation of lmperial's hardware arriving at a comet aboard the Rosetta mission flown by the European Space Agency, this project will use historical data from previous cometary encounters and more generally from the solar wind to study both the gross morphology and kinetic instabilities that mediate such interactions. The project will begin with a review of previous cometary encounters, including GIOTT0's fly-by of Comet Halley and the ISEE3/lCE fly-by of Comet Giacobini-Zinner. focussing on the kinetie instabilities and turbulence in the regions where cometary rnaterial is ionised and "picked up" by the solar wind. This will be contrasted with interactions at smaller, unmagnetised planets (e.9., Venus). The project will move on to develop the tools and technical expertise relevant to the RPC suite of instruments on Rosetta. These will be applied to both the Rosetta fly'bys of the Earth and those of asteroid Lutetia Uuly 2010) on its way to rendezvous with Comet 67PlCh uryumov-Gerasimen ko in 2014. |
