The Open University
Department Name: Faculty of Sci, Tech, Eng & Maths (STEM)
Abstract
The Open University (OU) has been a recipient of STFC research council funding for many years. In 2011 the Faculty of Science went through a major re-structuring which resulted in the merger of two STFC-funded departments; namely the Planetary and Space Sciences Research Institute (PSSRI) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy creating the new Department of Physical Sciences. The new department is currently a recipient of two STFC Rolling Grants, for its Astronomy and Planetary Science Research Groups plus other grants. In addition, the Department of Physical Sciences holds ~20 standard studentships plus 8 STFC CASE studentships within its Centre for Electronic Imaging. Members of the Department have made significant contributions over the years to STFCs programmes through Beagle-2, the Huygens, Rosetta, XMM, and is currently actively working on the ExoMars, Gaia and Euclid programmes. The resulting research output from these programmes contains significant know-how and IP which can be exploited further. We demonstrate through examples that the University is already engaging in such exploitation activities, and this proposal for an IPS fellowship is to create a four-year position which will investigate Knowledge Transfer activities within the department, where we believe that there is significant opportunity for growth in the exploitation programme which will have a significant impact on the UK, industry and sustainability of the reserach base.
