Lead Research Organisation:
University College London
Department Name: Mullard Space Science Laboratory
Abstract
The aims of the solar system programme at MSSL are to break new ground in the understanding of the physical processes at work within each of our theme topics:
(a) solar activity and the origin at the Sun of the solar wind and disturbances within it; including coronal mass ejections (CME), flares, filaments and filament eruptions
(b) solar wind formation and propagation and evolution through the heliosphere; including the source of the solar wind and understanding which regions on the Sun control the solar wind
(c) solar wind interaction with the Earth's magnetosphere; including solar wind physics at kinetic and large scales, reconnection, magnetospheric acceleration and transport processes and processes controlling the aurora and radiation belts
(d) solar wind and plasma interactions at other planetary environments; including ionospheric processes, comet-plasma interactions, planetary magnetospheric plasma populations and processes driving aurorae and X-ray emission
(e) planetary surface formation processes; including cratering chronology and dynamic feature tracking via super-resolution restoration

Impact | These are early times on the path to make public engagement in UK space missions more widespread and effective. Most of the work in this area is on a voluntary, best effort basis by academic and research staff. The WP argues for a more systematic, organised and well funded support of public engagement activities. Small, individual grant applications for outreach are often the only means to realise activities. Direct interaction by academics, researchers, PhD students with school pupils and teachers, especially in disadvantaged parts of the country, is a very effective, successful and rewarding way to engage the young in space projects. |

Title | Output of 3D model simulating externally driven ULF waves in Earth's magnetosphere, including the effect of convection on plasmaspheric density |
Description | This data set contains the ULF wave model output data required to produce the figures in the article: A. W. Degeling, I. J. Rae, C. E. J. Watt, Q. Q. Shi, R. Rankin and Q. G. Zong, "Control of ULF Wave Accessibility to the Inner Magnetosphere by the Convection of Plasma Density", J. Geophys. Res. (accepted Dec. 2017) doi:10.1002/2017JA024874 The dataset has a Matlab binary file format. It consists of a structure array "d" (with 325 elements). These elements correspond to the 2D parameter scan in driver frequency and elapsed time during plume development performed for this study. The elapsed time parameter has 25 elements, ranging 0 to 24 hours (i.e. 1 hour spacing), and the driver frequency parameter has 13 elements ranging from 1 to 7 mHz (with 0.5 mHz spacing). e.g. use "d = reshape(d,25,13);" to reshape the structure array into 2D with columns for the frequency scan and rows for the elapsed time scan. |

PI Contribution | We provide multiple data products from our instruments to the ESA Cluster Active Archive, in a special format, with the best possible calibration knowledge based on detailed inflight calibration knowledge. The ESA funding contributes part of the salary of an additional (UK) person who is an integral part of our team, and not regarded as an external partner with limited data access etc. Thus the work of the ESA funded person benefits from the intellectual stimulation, training (UCL-based) and team support that we provide, and in return helps us meet the contract goals which might otherwise be impossible for the STFC funded team alone (who also do other tasks such as science planning and commanding of the instruments). |
Collaborator Contribution | ESA provides funding which helps us to employ an additional team member. ESA also provides the central archive and its web interface, and facilitates regular cross-calibration workshops that bring all the Cluster instrument teams together. We collaborate with several other Cluster instrument teams in order to carry out the in-flight cross-calibration work. These include the WHISPER team (LPC2E/CNRS, Orleans, France) who provide absolute electron density reference measurements, the EFW team (IRF-U, Uppsala, Sweden) who provide spacecraft potential data and electric field data, and the FGM team (Imperial College, London) who provide calibrated magnetic field data. Perpendicular drift velocity estimates from electric and magnetic field are compared with PEACE perpendicular electron velocity measurements. We have also worked on other aspects of cross-calibration less frequently with the RAPID team (RAL, Harwell, UK and MPS, Gottingen, Germany) to cross-calibrate our supra-thermal electron and their energetic electron measurements, the EDI team (University of New Hampshire, USA) who use PEACE data to calibrate their ambient mode data, the CIS team (IRAP, Toulouse, France) to compare ion and electron velocity measurements, the DWP team (Uni Sheffield, UK) whose particle correlator experiment uses PEACE measurements, and the WIDEBAND team (Iowa, USA) for occasional absolute electron density reference measurements in plasma that is too rarefied for WHISPER to work well. |
Impact | The outcome is that our entire dataset, with very high quality calibrations, together with that of all the other Cluster instruments, is gradually becoming available to the global science community. This is an unprecedented facility in space plasma physics. The main impact (we believe) is that the annual publication rate for Cluster remains high even though it has been in operation since 2001, and is likely to remain so for many years after the mission ends and the instrument teams disband. Thus we are working to ensure very high scientific return from our instruments now and in the future. |
