Abstract
The Dark Energy Survey (DES) is the leading ground-based cosmology experiment in the world at the moment. This 100 million dollar project was 10 years in the making, but is now well underway.
What is DES? It is six year study of the southern sky that will test cosmology to unprecedented precision. It uses a 520 Megapixel digital camera (DECam) that is mounted on the 4 metre (``Blanco'') optical telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory in the Chilean Andes. Not only will DES make an impact in cosmology, it will also generate a wealth of discoveries in other areas, e.g. objects in the distant solar system, new companions to the Milky Way, distant black holes, etc.
The UK has been involved in DES since the project started. There are over 300 scientists in the international DES collaboration, of which almost 100 are in the UK (the remainder are in the USA, Spain, Chile, Brazil, Germany, and Switzerland).
DES has enormous potential for public engagement: not only are the concepts behind dark energy in themselves hugely compelling, we routinely generate fabulous images that capture the public's imagination.
It is essential that more time and effort goes into DES E/PO now, because the survey will be reaching its peak science productivity within the next two years. Just as DES is winding down, LSST will be nearing completion. As many of the E/PO materials developed for DES can be transferred directly to LSST, the impact of this fellowship will last for many years to come.
There are three, interlinked, aspects to my proposal: Improving the Dark Energy Survey webpages; Increasing the impact of Dark Energy Survey social media; Increasing the reach and significance of the Dark Energy Survey on UK society. The first two aspects have a global reach, the third is UK centric. The underlying theme is that by exploiting the creative talents of DES members world wide, I will be able to enhance STFC related E/PO significantly across the UK.

Results and Impact | PrimarySpace at UoS in Sept 2018. Talks, hands on activities. >1000 school kids from >10 schools. I did the intro to the session. On 31/05/2018 12:48, Sam Dunnett wrote: Dear All, Sussex Widening participation team are hosting a primary school event on the 12th September in the Jubilee building. We are lucky enough to be working with Katherine O'Connell who is the ex CEO of the UK Space Agency and has a passion for promoting STEM and jobs in the Space industry to young people especially young girls. We are expecting around a 1000 primary school pupils from year 2 and year 5 from schools that we work with in Eastbourne/Hastings on our Primary University programme. The day is going to involve a Q&A session for children and Katherine is hoping to get a trainee female astronaut to come along. We excitingly have one of the Mars Rovers on campus with an Airbus team who will be doing live demos of it in action. Avanti Communications are coming too with an exhibit and Katherine is working to get some more Space companies on board. Our primary school education team and students are working to deliver some classroom sessions around space and science. We are also having an exhibition space for some of our academics to display some hands on activities for this age range. We already have some people signed up to join in the exhibition. So the day is going to be busy and fun packed and we are hoping to inspire young people to engage in space and science and want to do jobs in this area in the future. Katherine is hoping to make this day the launch to a much larger primary programme and we are delighted to be part of this. We hope, once the children have returned to their schools, to hold a ticketed staff event to come along and see the Mars Rover, exhibits etc. the agenda for this is still fluid. Because of the nature of this event I thought it would be of interest to you and to keep you in the loop. I would be really happy if you want to get involved and if so, please give me a call or drop me a line. With Best wishes Sam |
