PI Contribution | A fruitful collaboration was formed between Royal Holloway and the CERN Beam Instrumentation group to develop electro-optic beam position monitors (EO-BPMs) for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. The Royal Holloway team has contributed to the simulation, design and manufacture of an EO-BPM prototype that was installed in the CERN SPS accelerator in 2016 for tests, and first signal was observed in December 2016. An improved prototype has been installed in March 2017 for ongoing tests, as part of the HL-LHC-UK project. |
Collaborator Contribution | CERN have contributed technical engineering support for the design and readout of the EO-BPM, and have provided beam time at the CERN SPS accelerator and associated infrastructure. A Royal Holloway student has been based at CERN for training and has become been integrated in the BI group. |
Impact | Results have been presented at International Beam Instrumentation Conference in September 2016 and at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider annual meeting in November 2016. |

PI Contribution | A collaboration was formed with the CERN Collimation team, to contribute to the design of the collimation system for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. Team members from Royal Holloway have been based on Long Term Attachment at CERN and are well integrated in the collimation activities, including participation in Machine Development at the CERN Control Centre and advanced simulation of the energy deposition around the accelerator. |
Collaborator Contribution | The CERN Collimation team have provided training and support for our researches based at CERN and worked together to develop various simulations of the accelerator and collimation system, including off-momentum studies, novel collimation schemes and active halo control. |

Results and Impact | Dr. Stephen Gibson first gave the public lecture "The Big Bang Experience: a brief history and future of the Large Hadron Collider" on 22 June 2017 at Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL). The event was well attended and the exciting demonstrations proved extremely popular, leading to the lecture being repeated many times for school groups, including at the "Girls Into Physics" Smallpeice Trust Science Residential at RHUL, sponsored by the Stephen Hawking Foundation in July 2017, and as a ticketed free lecture at the Royal Holloway Science Festival on 10 March 2018.
