M-Theory, Cosmology and Quantum Field Theory

Abstract
Our STFC research programme is focused on the interrelated fundamental problems of M-theory, quantum field theory and cosmology.
M-theory, which subsumes string theory and supergravity theory, is our central approach to unifying Einstein's theory of General Relativity with the Standard Model of particle physics. One of the most interesting features of M-theory is that it incorporates dual descriptions of non-perturbative Yang-Mills theories in terms of strings and branes, leading to profound connections between black holes and quantum field theory and also to new insights into strong coupling phenomena such as quark confinement. These connections will continue to be explored in a number of different ways, including using novel geometric techniques, exactly integrable quantum field theory models and theories with massless higher-spin excitations. The ultimate goal is to determine the fundamental degrees of freedom of M-theory which would have profound implications for particle physics phenomenology. Using both analytical and numerical techniques we will also construct and study black-hole solutions with novel properties that have important potential applications to both the quark gluon plasma and poorly understood systems in condensed matter such as high-temperature superconductors, exotic metals and insulators.
Cosmology continues to be a highly vibrant area of study driven by a wealth of new data. Key clues to the structure and the origin of the universe are to be found in the details of the cosmic microwave background. This will provide one focus of our activities both by analysing data as well as by studying the cosmological implications of the recently discovered Higgs field and extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics in inflationary scenarios. Understanding dark energy provides an important challenge for cosmology and we will actively pursue the possibility that massive gravity plays an important role. In another direction we will aim to extract imprints of quantum gravity, such as fundamental discreteness of spacetime, on cosmological data. Dark matter is another outstanding challenge that lies that the interface of research in both cosmology and particle physics and we will continue to develop novel and global statistical tools that draw on many different experiments in order to extract the strongest possible constraints and insights.

Planned Impact
The research proposal is aimed at understanding matter, space and time and the origin of the universe at the most fundamental level. Although it cannot be predicted when such fundamental research will translate into new technology, the current proposal can have an immediate impact on the integration of science into culture. This is made possible because the fundamental, cutting-edge nature of the research inspires and attracts people and because the investigators have outstanding collective expertise and skills as public communicators. The pathway to impact through public engagement directly benefits members of the public who enjoy and are stimulated by acquiring new knowledge about science and benefits society as a whole by building the widest possible base of support for science. We aim to motivate young people, including underrepresented groups such as women, to study science. We will carry out a program of public engagement events to achieve these goals. Explaining our research and its significance also deepens our understanding of our work and allows us to reflect on its direction. In the struggle to communicate to the public the concepts that lie at the heart of theoretical research, in seeking new ways to frame our results and situate them in the fabric of human intellectual history, we ourselves can arrive at new insights.
Another concrete pathway to impact is the production of highly trained individuals: the RAs. The young researchers who will be trained typically begin their careers as the top undergraduate performers who are motivated to answer the most fundamental `Big Questions' that our research addresses. The training that they receive as they participate in the research means that they emerge with the highest degree of technical expertise, experience of collaboration in a competitive environment, as well as the ability to direct their own research. These are qualities that are required in modern business and industry. We will provide training in public engagement.

Description | The research area is blue skies theoretical research into the fundamental structure of matter and spacetime. Significant results were obtained in two broad projects. The first was string/M-theory and applications to quantum field theory. String theory is a promising approach to unifying all the forces of nature, in particular giving a consistent quantum theory of gravity. We made important contributions to understand the rich geometrical structure of theory, its relation to blackhole physics, integrable theories, duality and applications to condensed matter and models of particle physics. The second main project was cosmology and quantum field theory. In this project the principal objective was to seek ways of testing innovative particle physics and quantum gravity theories against astrophysical data, with a particular focus on consistency and new projects for gravitational wave observations. Significant contributions were make to constraints on effective theories of gravity, on extracting cosmological data from gravitational wave backgrounds, on early universe cosmology and particle physics, and on Higgs physics. |
Exploitation Route | The results continue to have a significant impact on the academic community and there are potential long term technological applications. There is impact beyond theoretical particle physics to mathematics, quantum theory and condensed matter. |
Sectors | Digital/Communication/Information Technologies (including Software) Education Other |
Description | The research was focused on probing theoretical questions related to fundamental physics. Scientific breakthroughs in such endeavours invariably led to technological advances, but the precise nature of these and the timescales are unpredictable and can be long. Two specific aspects of the impact of the research are firstly, progress on the integration of science into the wider culture, made possible by our public communication and secondly, the training of young researchers. The positive impact on the economy is the production of highly trained individuals with the skills necessary to contribute at the highest level to modern businesses and industries. This includes but is not limited to, developments in conventional computing, notably machine learning, financial mathematics and quantum computing. |

Title | VevaciousPlusPlus, software for assessing vacuum stability in generic particle theories. Modular and highly customizable. Written in C++. |
Description | VevaciousPlusPlus is a tool for comprehensive vacuum stability analyses of generic theories beyond the SM (BSM). Among its many features, it finds all the minima of the classical scalar potential using the homotopy continuation method. The minima are then used for calculating vacuum decay probabilities including one-loop corrections and thermal effects. General models can be implemented easily and it's designed to be modular and extendable. |

Open Source License? | Yes |
Impact | With VevaciousPlusPlus it became feasible for the first time to include a sophisticated vacuum stability analysis in world-leading global fits of particle theories that include all available experimental data. The first such study has been performed for the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and currently being written up, with more studies of popular theories starting later this year. |

Results and Impact | I was inspirational about the study of natural sciences to 16 classes of pupils. They placed me among the finalists in the competition against some senior scientists. The goal ws to stimulate scientific curiosity and praise the prospect of a job in science. The project took advantage of the online platform "Careers Zone" to ensure the broadest coverage. I kept updated a schematic profile that reflects my research area. Students submitted questions in a text-based interface or chats on scheduled dates. For instance, I drew on past experience for addressing "How do I get into physics?" and signposted basic, yet accurate, resources for "What is a particle?". |

Results and Impact | I'm a Scientist is an online activity where school students connect with real scientists about real science. It's a competition between scientists, where students are the judges. Students challenge the scientists over fast-paced online text-based live CHATs. They ASK the scientists anything they want, and VOTE for their favourite scientist to win a prize of £500 to communicate their work with the public. Questions are done both live in the CHATs but also in Forums where students post questions they did not manage to make live. |

Results and Impact | Together with the Sussex Computer-Human Interaction Lab and Roberto Trotta from Imperial College, we designed a multi-sensory experience of dark matter for the London Science Museum. As part of the museum Lates (an adult-only late-night event), we created an interactive experience with sound, taste, smell, and touch where participants traveled through our galaxy. With ultra-sound haptic sensors and a narrated sound piece driven by the results actual physical calculations, the experience (which happened inside a portable planetarium with projected simulations of dark matter) was a great success. A video, made by science communication Imperial alumni, has been used in science outreach by the university and can be found here: youtube.com/watch?v=zKRsjGqz5Ls . |
