Results and Impact The British Geological Survey (BGS) and the UK Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) are
pleased to announce the release of the 21st Century Exploration Roadmap (21CXRM)
Palaeozoic Project, aiming to improve the knowledge and data from the
underexplored Palaeozoic petroleum systems of the North Sea and Greater Irish Sea.
The Project is part of the UK Government's endeavour to maximise the economic recovery of
hydrocarbons on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), in response to the Wood Review. The work
was undertaken as a joint-industry project by BGS with the then Department of Energy and
Climate Change (DECC) then OGA, Oil and Gas UK and 49 oil company sponsors between
November 2014 and May 2016.

Results and Impact BGS hosted part of the ERA Student 'Skill' event (16-17 May 2017). The aim of the event was to demonstrate the importance of post graduate researchers in ERA. BGS talked about the science being carried out that is relevant to the ERA GeoEnergy Test Bed and gave a tour of the BGS laboratory and 3D visualisation facilities. The BGS presentations were requested afterwards by the event organiser as they gave a 'clear overview' of the GTB activities.

Results and Impact BGS Keyworth hosted its third biennial Open Day on Saturday 01 July 2017. Well over 2000 people attended this year. The CCS stand itself received numerous visitors of all ages. Ceri Vincent and Helen Taylor explained how CCS works, what happens to the CO2 underground and where CCS can be carried out with the help of the now famous 'CC fishtank'. Helped make science interesting for school children and explained how CCS is important for a low carbon future to their parents.

Results and Impact Key players from Europe, Australia and the USA are joining forces to tackle the
challenge of removing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it underground in a bid to
make a real difference to our future climate.
The 'Pressure control and conformance management for safe and efficient CO2 storage' or 'PreACT'
project, aims to improve the cost effectiveness of safe CO2 storage. This will be done by
developing a pressure-based monitoring and verification workflow. Great work on this has
already taken place at several sites around the world and now those teams are joining forces to
accelerate the technology and move towards large-scale deployment.
The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has recently published a UK
Clean Growth Plan. As part of this, CO2 capture and storage is identified as a key part of the
UK's decarbonisation strategy, being linked directly to our industrial hubs and to future
expansion of the hydrogen economy.
The main challenges to CO2 storage are capacity, confidence and cost. Five European
Governments: Norway, Germany, The Netherlands, UK and France, with co-operation from the
US and Australia, make up the team bringing together both researchers and industry to tackle
these challenges through a number of applied research projects.
For the UK, the research team is a joint group from British Geological Survey (BGS) and
Plymouth Marine Laboratory, funded by BEIS.

Description New research using hydrogen aims to take the carbon out of heating

Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact The British Geological Survey (BGS) will lead the case study to support the decarbonisation of heating for large UK cities using novel hydrogen-based technology
in the recently funded ELEGANCY research project. This project is one of five supported by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)
with co-funding from the EU. The need to reduce emissions is vital to enable the UK to meet the greenhouse gas targets agreed at the COP21 Paris climate change meeting: to keep global temperature increase below 2°C. The recently published BEIS UK Clean Growth Strategy also recognises carbon (CO2) capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) as a key part of the UK's decarbonisation plans, linked directly to our industrial hubs and to future expansion of the hydrogen economy. Since 2015, the UK industry and research sectors have achieved much to demonstrate the UK's capability and capacity for CCUS. The objective of ELEGANCY is development of cost-effective technologies to reduce CO2 emissions from domestic heating currently released into the atmosphere, by use of hydrogen and CCUS. The ELEGANCY project will provide cutting-edge practical solutions to key research and technical challenges to support the low-carbon economy through hydrogen production with CCUS in the UK. It will consider the systems and technologies needed to decarbonise power, heating and transport using molecular hydrogen (H2) as a low-carbon fuel for heating, cooling, transport and industrial processes. The hydrogen is generated by the reformation of natural gas with offshore geological storage of the produced CO2.
