Title BGS National Karst Database
Description The aim being to retrieve karst data from field slips and paper maps with additional fine-scale detail gathered during fieldwork, from remote sensing techniques such as LiDAR (light detection and ranging) and from existing documentary data sources such as historical and modern Ordnance Survey maps, cave surveys, academic papers and historical documents. Other datasets such as a legacy Applied Geology database and the Mendip Cave Registry data are also being used to identify other sources of information where relevant. We collect data on five main types of karst feature: Sinkholes (or dolines), Stream sinks, Caves, Springs and incidences of associated damage to buildings, roads, bridges and other engineered works
Type Of Material Database/Collection of data
Provided To Others? Yes
Impact Most extensive source of information on landslides in Great Britain. This is information is used by stakeholders such as: infrastructure operators/owners, local authorities, land owners and engineering consultants/contractors

Title BGS National Landslide Database
Description The BGS National Landslide Database (NLD) is the most extensive source of information on landslides in Great Britain. Selected information from the database is now available as a free online resource (http://www.bgs.ac.uk/geoindex/, where you will need to select the Hazards theme). The database currently holds over 17 300 records which are continually being updated. Each landslide event record in the database is documented as fully as possible with information on location, name, size and dimensions, landslide type, trigger, damage caused, movement date, age and with a full bibliographic reference. For more information see http://www.bgs.ac.uk/landslides/nld.html

Title National Geotechnical Properties Database
Description This primarily holds data and information from ground investigations carried out for civil engineering purposes. The information is supplied to us by clients, consultants and contractors either as paper records or as Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS) digital data transfer format. A small number of data points are from laboratory test results carried out by the BGS. The design of the database is currently based on the AGS industry standard for Electronic Transfer of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Data version 3.1. It contains data relating to the project, the boreholes and pits within the report (including British National Grid Reference and geology), full descriptions, in situ measurements and results of tests on samples. The distribution of data generally reflects the requirements of our projects including UK Rocks and Soils Lithostratigraphical studies, or the areas covered by Ground Information for Sustainable Development and geohazards projects. Data are added from paper records or AGS digital data transfer format, which is the preferred method as they can be added quickly without transcription errors.

Sector Public
PI Contribution The Natural Hazards Partnership provides authoritative and consistent information, research and analysis on natural hazards for the development of more effective policies, communications and services for civil contingencies, governments and the responder community across the UK (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/). The BGS Engineering Geology Science directorate contributes to the NHP Hazard Impacts Modelling Group (Chair, Secretariat and scientific contributions to the landslide hazard programme - http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/science/hims/), NHP Steering Group, NHP Secretariat, landslide science notes (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/natural-hazards/landslides/) and contributes daily the landslide component of the NHP Daily Hazard Assessment (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/dha/).
Collaborator Contribution The Natural Hazards Partnership partners work in partnership to deliver four key products and services (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/) : The Daily Hazard Assessment (DHA - http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/dha/), the Hazard Matrix (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/hazard-matrix/), support to the UK's National Risk Assessment (NRA - http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/national-risk-assessment/) and Science Notes (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/hazards-with-science-notes/). Partners use their specialist knowledge to provide expert advice and information to feed into these services. By working together more useful, usable and used products can be developed in an efficient way. Our challenge is to broaden the focus of natural hazards risk management from what has been predominately an early warning system towards a more holistic and integrated approach, encompassing more emphasis on risk reduction and prevention
Impact The Natural Hazards Partnership (NHP) works in partnership to deliver four key products and services: The Daily Hazard Assessment (DHA - http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/dha/), the Hazard Matrix (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/hazard-matrix/), support to the UK's National Risk Assessment (NRA - http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/national-risk-assessment/) and Science Notes (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/hazards-with-science-notes/).
