Description Data from the NERC MST Radar Facility are used by a wide range of scientists from a variety of disciplines for basic research. They are also used operationally for the purposes of numerical weather prediction by 4 European meteorological organisations: the Met Office (UK), Deutsche Wetterdienst (Germany), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, and MeteoSwiss (Switzerland). This is undertaken through a commercial contract with the Met Office, which provides 32% of the Facility's budget.

Title Release of software aimed at helping scientists to include detailed metadata in their data files
Description The software was produced as part of a data project being undertaken by the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS). The aims of the project are to improve the quality and quantity of metadata included in data files and to spread the use of these standards across the atmospheric science community. These allow scientists to better understand the characteristics of the data that they are using and help to ensure that the data can be reliably reused in the future. The tool reported here is designed to separate the semantic task of defining metadata from the technical task of including them within data files. The tool, together with its documentation, has been published under a GNU General Public License (GPL), which means that anyone can make use of it.
Type Of Material Improvements to research infrastructure
Year Produced 2017
Provided To Others? Yes
Impact It is too soon to determine the impacts arising from the NCAS project and from this tool in particular.

Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution The Met Office are supplied with wind-profile data (through a commercial contract) from the MST radar. They use the data for the purposes of Numerical Weather Prediction. In return they provide the MSTRF with data monitoring statistics, which give an indication of the quality of the data. One of the publications for 2013 ("The usefulness of model-comparison statistics for wind-profiling radar operators") is a result of this collaboration.
Collaborator Contribution The Met Office provide monthly statistics of radar wind data quality.

Description Amateur Noctilucent Cloud observing network
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an activity, workshop or similar
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach International
Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact The MSTRF's Project Scientist (David Hooper) has been interacting with members of an amateur Noctilucent Cloud (NLC) observing network through a Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Noctilucent-Cloud-Observers-2012/199329523453711 . NLCs are a visible example of ice crystals that form high in the atmosphere during the mid-summer months. The ice crystals also give rise to intense radar echoes, which are observed by the MST Radar. This interaction has resulted in a scientific collaboration aimed at better uderstanding the NLCs and radar echoes.

Results and Impact The MSTRF's Project Scientist gave a talk on Noctilucent Clouds, i.e. on ice crystals that form at altitudes of around 82 km during the mid-summer months. This was to a group of approximately 25 students who were visiting the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory at the time. Results and Impact This was an unusual activity in that its aim was to encourage the children to become more-engaged in reading. The teacher was keen to get a wide variety of people involved in the project, including scientists such as the MSTRF's Project Scientist. The pupils were particularly interested in how the life of a research scientist provided opportunities for living and working in exotic foreign locations. This tapped into the theme of adventure in the chosen book - Rudyard Kipling's "Kim".

The pupils were made aware of the wider implications of being a scientist.
