Oceans and Human Health: Implications for Society and Well-Being
Description | We have developed greater understanding of the importance of the marine environment for supporting and sustaining human welfare and wellbeing. We are also improving understanding of how human activities and global change impacts on our marine environment can thus directly and indirectly affect society and individuals in terms that they can relate to and understand the importance of. We have developed indicators that will tell us about change in marine ecosystem services, but data is not being collected routinely that will tell us if these indicators are changing. We have developed ways of valuing marine ecosystems that involve monetary valuation, but also consulting with members of the public and seeking their views. We have greater understanding of how development of offshore renewable energy will affect other ecosystem services. We have considered how co-location of renewable energy and specific fisheries might work in parcatice to the benefit of both sectors. We have developed conceptual models of ecosystem service links to underlying biodiversity and function We have increased understanding of the ecological and socio-economic effects of ocean acidification and climate change on fisheries dependent communities |
Exploitation Route | These findings can be used by policy makers, managers, regulators and the general public to understand how we affect the marine environment and how this in turn affects society and individuals. This can support decisions that need to be made in marine policy, licensing and planning for different economic sectors such as renewable energy, fishing and aquaculture and for designation of marine protected areas for conservation. It also empowers the general public by raising awareness of how changes in the marine environment and the uses we make of it can benefit and enhance, or degrade, their welfare and wellbeing. |
Sectors | Agriculture Food and Drink Communities and Social Services/Policy Education Energy Environment Leisure Activities including Sports Recreation and Tourism Transport |
Description | We have developed and applied methods for assessing the full range of marine ecosystem services and valuing their social and economic benefits at local, national and international scales. These include understanding impacts of human activities and climate change These have generated significant interest among local, national, EU and international policy makers, regulators and managers and supported development of their own assessments and understanding of the issues and complexities in this area. These findings have input to documents presented at the e European Parliament and in a paper and recommendations on Marine Natural Capital prepared and submitted by tyhe Natural Capital Committee |

Impact | The PML Team (C. Turley (CT), T. Keizer and A. Queir?s) participated in the UNFCCC COP23 meeting in Bonn, Germany where they led/contributed to 5 events incl. EU Oceans Day and the UN Oceans Action Day. PML had an exhibition stand, achieved various media outreach including a live broadcast on the WWF Climate Facebook site and PML led/contributed to strategic and informative publications. CT's NERC KE Fellowship was essential in facilitating these activities, including additional support through on-going collaborations with PML, BIOACID, POGO, GOA-ON and BNP Paribas, for example in staffing of the exhibition stand and the production of policy guides (see www.oceansofimpact.global). CT organised the EU Oceans Day side event, the science panel for UN Oceans Action Day and the UN side event held in the WWF pavilion and each had high level science and policy speakers. The side event she organised in the GB pavilion showcased UK marine science. She also facilitated and mentored young scientists from PML, POGO and BIOACID to engage the delegates at the exhibition stand and one (AQ) to have a speaking role in one side event. Many state and non-state actors announced initiatives for climate action, including the launch of the Ocean Pathway Initiative, to link healthy oceans with climate change action through the UN climate processes. |

Title | Development of a fish and demersal species model to consider life traits experiments under ocean acidification and warming |
Description | We developed a new model based on SS-DBEM species distribution model which uses projected environmental variables (e.g. temperature, salinity, O2, pCO2, primary production and currents) from the coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical models. It uses current and past species distribution, the characteristics of the habitats (e.g. coral reef or distance from coast) and previous environmental conditions, (e.g. species habitat preference profile, Cheung et al., 2008). Given their importance, we considered possible changes in sea grass and seaweed coverage driven by simulated blooms, based on temperature and pH levels and potential effects on species attributed to habitat preferences. Next, the model combines past distribution of the species under study, with ecology and physiology theory based on both experiments and observations to parameterise the processes that drive responses to old and new conditions under scenarios of change (Cheung et al., 2011). These processes include individual growth rates, larval mortality and recruitment, and dispersal of larvae and adults. Instead of fixed values we allowed parameters values to change dynamically with the temperature and/or pH values projected by the biogeochemical model scenarios, according to experimental data or information derived from the literature. Finally, the model considers species interactions according to the size-spectrum theory (Jennings et al., 2008), to ensure the carrying capacity of individual geographical cells is not exceeded. The model outputs consisted of yearly changes of species distribution and biomass with a horizontal spatial resolution of 0.5° x 0.5°. These were then used to investigate the intensity and direction of change in species distribution and biomass, and were averaged by decades to account for natural variability, between "present" (1991-2000) and three "future" periods (2011-2020, 2041-2050 and 2090-2099). Potential catches for each species were estimated using Maximum Sustainable Yield principles, using projected species' biomass and their intrinsic population growth rate (McAllister et al. 2001). This approach has been validated for the North Atlantic fisheries projections (Froese et al., 2012; Fernandes et al., 2013). Data generated from experiments undertaken within the NERC UK Ocean Acidification Research Programme (UKOA; Godbold and Solan, 2013; Queirós et al., 2014) were used to update model parameters. Information was supplemented with recently published literature on OAW (Hendriks, 2010; Melzner et al., 2009; Thomsen et al., 2010; Frommel et al., 2012; Schalkhausser et al., 2013). These further constrained the model parameters for commercially important species in the UK. Only results from exposure experiments running for longer than one month were used to limit the use of short-term experiments that are often quantifying responses to shock (Form and Riebesell, 2012; Williamson et al., 2013). Although longer experiments would be preferred, these are only now starting to emerge (Kroeker et al., 2013; Queirós et al., 2014; Mackenzie et al., 2014a,b). Experimental results were available for only a limited number of parameters for fish species, with more information available in the literature for shellfish (Wenberg et al 2012). The parameters for which experimental information was available include larval mortality (LM) from experiments with seabass (Pope et al., 2014); LM from Frommel et al. (2012) and length/weight relationship (LW) from Melzner et al. (2009) were available for cod; LM from Schalkhausser et al. (2013), LW, growth (G), larvae and adult dispersal for king-scallop; for blue mussel all of these parameters were available as well as additional information about adult mortality (AM) from Hendriks et al. (2010); and finally, for the common cockle we found bivalves generic parameters for LW and G (Hendriks, 2010), and AM from UKOA long-term soft sediment experiment (unpublished data, J.A. Godbold and M. Solan, University of Southampton). We excluded pelagic fish species since only one published paper on Atlantic Herring was found (Franke and Clemmesen, 2011). |

Results and Impact | Stakeholder workshop with participants from across the Western Indian Ocean, primarily NGOs, but also policy-makers. Workshop objectives were to: 1) Gather evidence of strategies that have been or could be used in the Western Indian Ocean to build resilience among coastal communities facing changes in coral reefs and strategies focused on coral reefs; 2) Capture lessons learnt about the different approaches, what has worked (or not), where and why. In particular understand to what extent ecosystem services language and approaches facilitate development and implementation of such strategies in the WIO context; 3) Trial a visual method of community engagement involving image exchange, participatory mapping, creation of mini coast-scapes and participatory video to assess resilience strategies. 4) Draw together a diverse group of stakeholders from across the WIO who may be interested in future collaboration. Each of these objectives were met and many participants highlighted their interest in working with us in future and for having a go at the visual method we developed |

Results and Impact | Mel Austen and Western Philippines University researchers (WPU) visited Purok Marikit, a village of around 400 people built on stilts in the coastal mangrove of Palawan, Philippines. WPU introduced the Blue Communities Programme and its Coordinator (Mel Austen) to an organised gathering of .around 20 people (mostly women with their children) including the leader of seaweed harvesting. This was followed by a question and answer session and discussion. The stakeholder community was very engaged. Issues we discussed included Marine Plans (they have one), the importance to them of sustainability for future generations; difficulties that there is not enough enforcement of protected areas so poachers encroach - the municipality is supposed to enforce marine protected areas but don't have sufficient resource; the coastal community would like training in marketing and adding value to fish and dried fish and other marine products; and support systems to get their products to market. They displayed some examples of creative art that had been made from washed up plastic waste which they are keen to bring to market. We discussed fish for food vs fish for cash. Fish is for cash to buy rice, villagers only eat the fish if there is more than they need for cash. Fishing is in both open coast, but close to shore, or within the mangrove. They have a middleman system who gives loans but buys fish at a cheaper rate in return. The villagers were very interested in Blue Communities and are keen to develop the opportunities it presents for improving their livelihoods. |
