Description | Earth Observation (EO) technology, infrastructure and data have been used to conduct fundamental and applied research on physical and ecological processes in oceanic, coastal and inland waters, in support of interdisciplinary science and global operational monitoring. Description | The database here presented includes quality-controlled bio-optical and biogeochemical variables derived from autonomous profiling Biogeochemical Argo float measurements, and supports field and remote ocean color applications. Data represent the first optical depth (i.e., the layer of interest for satellite remote sensing) and have been collected between October 2012 and January 2016, around local noon, in several oceanic areas encompassing the diversity of ocean's trophic environments. In addition to the first optical depth (as derived from the in situ measured depth of the euphotic layer), the presented database is compiled with data of diffuse light attenuation coefficients of photosynthetically available radiation and downward irradiance at 3 wavelengths (380, 412 and 490 nm), chlorophyll a concentration, fluorescent dissolved organic matter, and particle light backscattering at 700 nm. Associated errors to each variable are also reported. |

Description | The presented database includes 0-1000 m vertical profiles of bio-optical and biogeochemical variables acquired by autonomous profiling Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) floats. Data have been collected between October 2012 and January 2016, around local noon, in several oceanic areas encompassing the diversity of ocean's trophic environments. The database includes profiles of downward irradiance at 3 wavelengths (380, 412 and 490 nm), photosynthetically available radiation, chlorophyll a concentration, fluorescent dissolved organic matter, and particle light backscattering at 700 nm. All variables have been quality controlled following specifically-developed procedures, that aimed to support biogeochemical and bio-optical applications at the global scale. Data corruption by biofouling and any instrumental drift has also been verified. Moreover, to allow users for different biogeochemical applications, vertical profiles of chlorophyll a and particle light backscattering at 700 nm have been presented before and after advanced processing (e.g., non-photochemical quenching correction, identification of spikes). Vertical profiles of temperature and salinity associated to these bio-optical data are also provided although they have been only quality-controlled for sensor issues related to bio-fouling and instrumental drift. |

Description | Surveillance data of cholera outbreaks at the district level in India over the period July 2009 to December 2019 were collected from publicly available weekly epidemiological reports published in Portable Document Format by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of India (IDSP). Impact | The epidemiological datasets of have been used has a core input for the development of machine learning model to produce environmental cholera-risk forecast based on combination satellite climate data records. We have demonstrated a novel application of machine learning for cholera risks in coastal India. The algorithm identified correctly 89.5% of outbreaks across all coastal Indian district reporting cholera outbreaks. We are investigating potential for transfer of model to other regions and possible inclusion of socio-economic data. Peer-reviewed article has been published in Dec 2020 in the peer-reviewed journal Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health. Amy Campbell is first author, and Dr Racault is corresponding author. The results have been presented by Amy Campbell at the International Symposium Ocean & Human Health 2-3 Dec 2020. The paper has achieved an altimetric score of 57 (In the top 5% of all research outputs scored by Altmetric). The paper has been taken up by more than 7 news outlets including the BBC world news. Title | Global ocean lagrangian trajectories based on AVISO velocities, v2.2 |
Description | The National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) Long Term Science Single Centre (LTSS) Global Ocean Lagrangian Trajectories (OLTraj) provide 30-day forward and backward Lagrangian trajectories based on AVISO (Satellite Altimetry Data project) surface velocities. Each trajectory represents the path that a water mass would move along starting at a given pixel and a given day. OLTraj can be thus used to implement analyses of oceanic data in a Lagrangian framework. The purpose of OLTraj is to allow non-specialists to conduct Lagrangian analyses of surface ocean data. The dataset has global coverage and spans 1998-2019 with a daily temporal resolution. The trajectories were generated starting from zonal and meridional model velocity fields that were integrated using the LAMTA (6-hour time step - part of ) as described in Nencioli et al., 2018 and SPASSO (Software package for and adaptive satellite-based sampling for ocean graphic cruises containing LAMTA) software user guide. Please see the documentation section below for further information. Version 2.2 is a higher resolution version of V2.0 and also has double value for time variables to permit access via THREDDS. |

Title | Near-real-time quality controlled radiometric profiles acquired by Bio-Argo floats |
Description | Vertical profiles of Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) and downward irradiance (Ed) at 3 wavelengths (380, 412 and 490 nm) are routinely acquired by autonomous Bio-Argo floats. The database here presented includes radiometric profiles that have been quality-controlled using a specifically developed procedure for real-time distribution of data. The procedure is aimed at verifying only the shape of profiles. In each profile, dark signal, atmospheric clouds, spikes and wave focusing are flagged in a way compliant with the Argo real-time data management system. These data are therefore totally adapted to derive optical quantities such as the diffuse light attenuation coefficients. No quality control on the measured irradiance quantity is performed, which would require development of delayed-mode quality-control procedures. |

Title | SST collected by surfers in the southern UK and western Ireland between 2014 and 2017 |
Description | This dataset consists of sea surface temperature (SST) data collected by recreational surfers around the southern UK and Western Ireland coastline over the period from 5th January 2014 to 8th February 2017. These data were collected as part of a research project supported by Plymouth Marine Laboratory. Over the study period, the recreational surfers collected 297 independent samples of SST. The surfers were equipped with a UTBI-001 Tidbit V2 Temperature Data Logger and a Garmin etrex 10 GPS. The Garmin etrex 10 device was used to extract GPS information (latitude and longitude) for each surf. The Tidbit V2 temperature logger was attached, using cable-ties, at mid-point to the leash of the surfboards to ensure continuous contact with seawater when surfing, measuring temperature in the top metre of the water column. Roughly every 6 months over the study period, the Tidbit V2 temperature loggers were rigorously compared with a VWR1620-200 traceable digital thermometer (with an accuracy of 0.05 degrees C at the range of 0 to 100 degrees C) at 1 degree C intervals from 6 to 25 degrees C using a PolyScience temperature bath. Over the study period, all sensors performed within the manufacturers technical specifications. A piecewise regression to model was used to correct any Tidbit V2 temperature data collected to remove systematic biases between sensors, such that the errors in each sensor were within the accuracy of VWR1620-200 traceable digital thermometer. Temperature data were collected at 10 second intervals during each surfing session. The data were processed to remove any data collected before and after entering the water and SST were extracted by computing the median of the remaining data. Standard deviations on the remaining data are also provided to give an index of SST variability during each surf session. |

PI Contribution | I have presented an invited seminar on the topic "Ocean-Colour Observations in Climate Studies" to the Kyoto University Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability in May 2017. My presentation also included slides provided by Dr Stefan Simis on GloboLakes: Global Observatory of Lake Responses to Environmental Change. During my visit, we developed a research collaborative work on the study of the impact of typhoons on river discharge and coastal environment in Japan. To this research, I have contributed expertise on ocean-colour data and provided ESA OC-CCI Chlorophyll products to support validations of observations from high-resolution land-ocean-atmosphere coupled model developed at Kyoto University and JAMSTEC Yokohama to simulate hourly river discharge following typhoon events. I have also provided input and text for the peer-reviewed publication that came out of this collaborative research. |

Impact | We have used machine learning techniques to analyse in combination satellite climate data records and epidemiological data to produce environmental cholera-risk forecast. We have demonstrated a novel application of machine learning for cholera risks in coastal India. The algorithm identified correctly 89.5% of outbreaks across all coastal Indian district reporting cholera outbreaks. We are investigating potential for transfer of model to other regions and possible inclusion of socio-economic data. Peer-reviewed article has been published in Dec 2020 in the peer-reviewed journal Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health. Amy Campbell is first author, and Dr Racault is corresponding author. Results and Impact | 'I'm an Engineer, get me out of here' is a free on-line event where UK school students meet and interact with engineers. The Space Zone was one of the themed zones of the November 2016 event and it was funded by the UK Space Agency. The zone was the busiest of all the 'I'm an Engineer' zones for this event with over 2,300 questions asked by students, in particular I received lots of interest in my work with students wanting to know how satellites are able to take such clear pictures of the ocean and with particular interest in whether I've had been able to see any animals from space. Reports from participating schools highlight that 'I'm an Engineer' brought engineering into lessons and supported engineering-related aspects of the Maths, D&T and Science curriculum. More importantly, the chance for students to actually interact with real-life engineers greatly helped them to realise the range of STEM careers available to them. |

Results and Impact | A presentation "Plymouth Marine Laboratory OSR Research and ITAC 2017" was given. It was followed by questions and discussion. The results, presented at this forum were used to start a new project on oil spill detection in the the Strait of Malacca using remote sensing. The presentation introduced Plymouth Marine Laboratory as a world-leading organization undertaking cutting-edge research in the marine environment. It has been decided that PML will be the host of ITAC forum in 2017. |

Results and Impact | Under the auspices of ONWARD (Open Network on Water-Related Diseases) project, an international training course was organised on monitoring microbial quality of water using remote sensing and in-situ measurements. The training focused on monitoring microbial quality of water using remote sensing and in-situ measurements. The course was designed to provide participants with a clear understanding of what happens in the water body in your backyard, and how to test the water and how to avoid infections from water-borne diseases. There was an online component to the training course, as well as a hands on component. The online course attracted over 170 registered participants, and the course was delivered by an international team of 15 scientists, epidemiologists, modellers and engineers. |

Results and Impact | I presented a talk: "Satellite imaging in support of marine autonomous system operations", about PML work on the MASSMO project led by NOC and co-funded by Dstl, demonstrating the capabilities of marine autonomous vehicles for scientific and naval operational surveys. There were many participants from the Royal Navy, industry and government agencies. PML near-real time satellite support to visualise ocean fronts and other features was critical to the success of MASSMO-3, and plans were developed for the next mission. |

Results and Impact | This news article was in line with a press release which alerted the media and other PML stakeholders/interested parties to a new study which combined two innovative technologies to probe the mystery of how seabirds locate food hotspots across vast tracts of ocean. By bringing the two technologies together, the scientists have shown that the birds search out regions where fronts form most frequently, so making their foraging more efficient and less energetically costly. This will improve knowledge and understanding in this field. This news story widened the potential reach of the press release, highlighting the results of the study and demonstrating the importance of ocean fronts to flying predators. The technique used, in the Celtic Sea on this occasion, can be used anywhere across the global ocean. It has great potential for identifying key feeding grounds for a wide range of predators, and so could become an indispensable tool in the future for identifying conservation hotspots. |

Results and Impact | Dr Marie-Fanny Racault participated in the COP25 UK Pavilion Earth Observation Side Event 'Earth Observation and Climate Change: A Critical Capability in Understanding Our Changing World'. The event was led by moderator Prof Gideon Henderson (Defra CSA) who addressed audience to introduce the event and speakers, and gave a keynote speech, followed by six speaker presentations (including Dr Racault), and an audience discussion. Dr Racault's presentation focused on Earth Observations in the Oceans, and showed how Earth Observations provide a unique capability to monitor the oceans on both global and local scales. She presented examples of her research on marine phytoplankton and fisheries, and new applications to water-borne diseases (such as cholera) monitoring and human health. Finally, she reported on the potential opportunities for Earth observations to support ocean-based measures for the Paris Agreement Nationally Determined Contributions in the areas of adaptation and mitigation. Results and Impact | This press release was intended to make public the news that Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) was shortlisted in the "environment and conservation" category of 'The Charity Awards', Civil Society Media's annual awards programme earlier in the year, held to identify, recognise and reward those organisations doing exceptional work in all areas of charitable activity. The nomination for the award was based on the work of the Europe-Africa Marine Earth Observation Network (EAMNet) project. PML subsequently won the award in the aforementioned category. The press release served as a vehicle to promote both the EAMNET project, and PML, with media, funders, collaborators, policy-makers and the general public, emphasised through the success at the Charity Awards. |

Results and Impact | This press release alerted the media and other PML stakeholders/interested parties to a new study which combined two innovative technologies to probe the mystery of how seabirds locate food hotspots across vast tracts of ocean. By bringing the two technologies together, the scientists have shown that the birds search out regions where fronts form most frequently, so making their foraging more efficient and less energetically costly. This will improve knowledge and understanding in this field. This press release highlighted the results of the study, demonstrating the importance of ocean fronts to flying predators. The technique used, in the Celtic Sea on this occasion, can be used anywhere across the global ocean. It has great potential for identifying key feeding grounds for a wide range of predators, and so could become an indispensable tool in the future for identifying conservation hotspots. |

Results and Impact | Peter Miller presented ocean front techniques for studying marine animal habitat preference, and feeding into Marine Protected Areas policy. Kylie Scales presented the ecology of gannets and turtles in relation to oceanic fronts. The sharing of observations on a wide range of ecosystems produced many inter-linkages and collaborations that would not otherwise have happened. |
