High-value steel innovation for sustainability

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Engineering

Abstract

To stimulate innovation in high-value manufacturing with steel, Tata Steel is exploring a range of novel production processes and new applications that exploit the high performance of steel while retaining the environmental benefits of its long life and recyclability. Several new applications are emerging in the development of next generation automotive transmission systems. In parallel, innovation in powder, laser and additive processing of steel creates new opportunities to tailor product properties efficiently.

This project will examine how these product and process innovations can also support the delivery of improved sustainability - particularly through the delivery and nurture of high-value, lightweight but long-lasting components and products. The project will initially examine the whole- life environmental impacts of various products, through a range of possible process chains and through use, end-of-life and material recovery recycling under different business models. Out of this broad scoping, one or two key aspects related to the energy or material efficiency of new steel applications will be developed in depth.

The output of the work will include detailed analysis of particular processes and products, and more general guidance on the sustainability of future steel innovation.
