Functional materials for electromagnetic profile shaping

Lead Research Organisation: Lancaster University
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Recent work in CI indicates that spatially dispersive inhomogeneous media, such as wire media and other metamaterials, could be theoretically modelled to shape the profile of the electromagnetic modes they provide. This can extend the possibilities beyond the usual sinusoidal shape. In accelerators, the E-field profile could be flattened to enable higher acceleration for a given peak.

The student will work on the analytical and numerical analysis of the electromagnetic response of these composite structures comparing results from different EM simulators (CST Microwave Studio and MEEP). The aim is to identify suitable structures in the microwave and mm-wave range which could be tested for experimental validation.

The student will be based in Cockcroft.
