The measurement of gamma using the LHCb Run II dataset

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics

Abstract

Enriching our understanding of the weak interaction of quarks is the bedrock of the LHCb physics programme. No better is this exemplified than in the measurement of CP asymmetries in BDh decays where large charge asymmetries have already been established by the Oxford group in the Run I dataset. These large asymmetries have a simply relationship to the underlying imaginary phase information that is embedded in, but not prescribed by, electroweak theory. The student's role over the course of Run II will be to mastermind the analysis of Run II data using all the experience that our group has gathered from Run I. The conclusion of the thesis work should reduce the error on the central parameter of interest, the CKM phase gamma, to 3-4 (currently 9-10). The student will also spend an extended period located at CERN where they will be involved with the daily operation, or perform detector R&D for a future upgrade.
