Exploring the Changing Shell Structure of Nuclei
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Manchester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy
Abstract
The project aims to investigate the properties of a nuclei near the proton and neutron drip lines using cases of exotic nuclei which will accentuate measurements for the physics cases such as the role of the three-nucleon forces, the interplay of central and tensor components of the nucleon-nucleon interaction on the shell structure and the topology of the nucleus near the drip lines.
The short-lived exotic nuclei will be provided by CERN's ISOLDE facility to the collinear resonance ionisation spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment beam-line, which allows laser spectroscopy measurements of magnetic dipole moment, electric quadrupole moment, charge radii and spin of individual states of interest.
A portion of experimental work will also be carried out at Manchester's PSI to setup an ion source beam-line analogous to the CRIS experiment for resonance ionisation scheme testing or similar experiments.

Title | Nucleosynthesis card game |
Description | A.R.V. made an educational card game for sale to the general public featuring art work of astrophysical processes to be played in a way which will raise awareness of the connection to nuclear physics. |
Type Of Art | Artistic/Creative Exhibition |
Year Produced | 2018 |
Impact | Requests to make a digital version of the game. Further outreach activities planned at University of York using the cards. |

Description | The size and shape of short-lived indium atomic nuclei were measured by laser spectroscopy. The measurements revealed sudden structural changes of the nuclei with changing neutron number and gave details of properties of the nuclear force which binds nuclei. |
Exploitation Route | The technical developments made during the research will enable sensitive separation and measurement of other exotic isotopes for further nuclear structure and atomic physics research. Furthermore, the setup developed can be directly adapted by industry for ultra-trace analysis of elements. The nuclear structure results obtained demands further research by experiment and development of nuclear theory to explain. Two national research facilities (ISOLDE, Switzerland and FRIB, USA) will use a sensitive isotope separation and detection setup developed as part of the work, and which can be applied to the industry for ultra-trace analysis of elements also. |

Description | The technical developments in isotope separation and detection can be applied directly to the Manchester-based https://www.artemis-analytical.com/ for ultra-trace analysis of elements for e.g. carbon-dating for historical purposes, or tracing the origin of compounds used in the food and drink. |
