Measurement of the electron energy distribution at AWAKE

Lead Research Organisation: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

Fearghus Keeble will work on the AWAKE experiment at CERN which aims to demonstrate for the first time proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration. The experiment is to start taking data in 2016 and will run until the end of 2018. One of the primary aims of the experiment is to inject a low-energy (~15 MeV) bunch of electrons into the proton-driven wakefield and accelerate these to the GeV scale in under 10 m. Fearghus is involved in the design of the electron spectrometer which will be used to measure the energy spectrum. He will be responsible for commissioning, data taking and final analysis in order to make this headline measurement.
