Endometallated bis(carboranes) as Novel Catalysts

Lead Research Organisation: Heriot-Watt University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering and Physical Science

Abstract

Endometallated bis(carboranes) have potential as catalysts in a number of reactions, but we will focus initially on alkene isomerisation, alkene hydrogenation and the hydrosilylation of acetophenone and styrene. The project will explore the many ways in which these catalysts can be chemically modified to optimise each reaction and therefore it will involve the synthesis, spectroscopic and structural characterisation of potential catalysts, followed by their catalytic testing.

Description We have discovered a variety of methods for making different, but similar molecules. The chemical pathway that we use depends on how this specific ligand binds to the metal, which has led to novel binding modes. Some compounds have been found to be catalytically active for 2 different types of reactions.
Exploitation Route Expands our knowledge of the surrounding chemistry and fills gaps in the literature. Adds new uses for these types of molecules and introduces simple, novel ways to tune catalytic properties.
