Abstract
The production of food fit for human consumption is vital to public health and food security. Yet the processes of judging and making food fit to eat have been largely neglected by social scientists. This is symptomatic of a dearth of research into foodstuffs (Stassart & Whatmore 2003) which, though starting to be addressed (e.g. Atkins 2010; Roe, 2006a, 2006b), remains at an early stage of development. The aim of this PhD is to make an important contribution to social scientific research into foodstuffs by examining the development of meat inspection in the UK since 1914.
