Collaborative tools to assist carers with protecting the online safety, security and privacy of young people with special needs

Lead Research Organisation: Heriot-Watt University
Department Name: S of Mathematical and Computer Sciences

Abstract

The goal of this project is to design effective tools to support carers in the protection of the online safety, security and privacy of young people with special needs. Failure to adequately protect youths online can expose families to vulnerabilities, including financial loss (e.g. excessive online purchases), social rejection (e.g. bullying), negative exposure (e.g. posting of inappropriate photos) and agem inappropriate encounters (e.g. photos, videos, strangers). Such consequences are particularly damaging to young people with special needs (e.g. autism spectrum conditions (ASC)) as they are already marginalised and, particularly for children with ASC, they don't necessarily understand that their online behaviour may be inappropriate with possible negative outcomes.
