Additive Manufacturing for Cardiovascular Devices
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Nottingham
Department Name: Faculty of Engineering
Abstract
Additive manufacturing is contributing significantly to progression of medical implants and devices. Whilst the applications of AM in structural and musculoskeletal applications have been investigated and exploited already, involvement of additive manufacturing in cardiovascular disease provides its own challenges. I will be investigating the interaction of additively manufactured surfaces with the cardiovascular environment and looking into design methods for bespoke AM parts.

Description | Novel polishing methods (electrochemical jet machining) are appropriate for prevention of coagulation on the surface of additively manufactured metal parts Existing assumptions about "natural" mitral valve shapes and sizes used in repair surgeries do not account for the wide variation of anatomy in vivo |
Exploitation Route | Polishing methods should be further investigated by toxicity assays etc and could be used to control body response to implants in the future A design method for individualised mitral valve implants should be produced |

Results and Impact | A group went to a Leicester school and provided Turtle-based coding lessons for two classes of students, and discussed the potential for its use in designing products for 3D printing, as well as why 3D printing might help in making certain objects. |

Results and Impact | Around 100 members of the public attended presentations around the theme of "Tech-ing Healthcare into the 21st Century". We held a stall in the venue presenting research in medical and veterinary fields of 3D printing and took a desktop printer to show an example of how parts are built. Discussions were held with members of the public about our research and the potential for change in medical fields in the near future with bespoke medicine. |
