Co-Creating Citizen Science for Innovation

Abstract

This PhD is focused on the vision to move from a 'contributory' to a 'co-created' model of citizen science (Bonney 2009) for the purposes of tackling issues of public interest at a local level, with a specific focus on conservation and sustainable development goals. The PhD student will work in collaboration with H2020 projects to help define opportunities and challenges as well as evaluate this transition. It will interrogate which conditions and approaches support 1) specific participatory practices critical for issue and question definition, expert, local and situation-specific knowledge, data analysis as well as, 2) innovations arising, be they technology, scientific, or social, and will test models, or interventions, for facilitating participatory practices. The student will have access to citizen science campaigns, participants and datasets, and will use observations and ethnographic methods to analyse activities and outcomes. In return the PhD will make a contribution to defining and developing Citizen Science models and resources that being developed for the H2020 projects, that will lead to the sustainability of the projects in the long term and the development of the wider field of citizen science.

Title Narrative Interview Story Timeline Tool 
Description The Narrative Interview Story Timeline Tool is a framework designed to help research interviewees reflect on and map out their narrative of their experiences of participating in a project, before taking part in a narrative interview. The tool is divided into five stages, the goals of the project, the beginning, middle and end of the project, and then the outcomes of the project. For the beginning, middle and end of the project the tool asks interviewees to consider the activities that took place, the people that were involved, the success and failures at that point in the project and any reflections they have. The tool is intended to help interviewees gather their thoughts and reflections, and act as a prompt for them when engaging in an unstructured narrative interview, which can be a daunting and unfamiliar experience for interviewees.

Impact Completion of the Narrative Interview Story Timeline Tool was optional and due to time committments of participating in the research only 50% of the research participants completed the Tool. Those that did complete the tool gave a much more coherent account of their experiences of the project than those that did not. Story TImelines that had been completed were provided to Jade Gunnell prior to the interview, which helped Jade to plan in advance were she might like to probe for more information during the interview. A couple of research participants explained to Jade Gunnell that they had found the process of filling in the tool really useful for their own self-reflection, or else useful in helping them remember a project that may have taken place a few years before.

Results and Impact 20 people attended a workshop event at the University of Dundee Botanic Gardens entitled 'How to be a Citizen Scientist.' The workshop aimed to introduce the public to the concept of citizen science through presentations and practical activities. Jade Gunnell, another academic from University of Dundee, and a local volunteer citizen science co-odinator presented on the concept of citizen science and active projects that are taking place. Jade Gunnell then facilitated the partcipation of the attendees in collecting data for the project Earthworm Watch, run by the Natural History Museum, London and Earthwatch UK. Evaluation of the event demonstrated that the event was enjoyed by participants, many of whom had never engaged with citizen science before. Some participants went on to volunteer in other citizen science projects.
