Assessing volatility during the vitrification of model ILW Wastestreams
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Sheffield
Department Name: Materials Science and Engineering
Abstract
A technology independent, detailed study on the incorporation of 3 representative model ILW wastestreams (Cs containing, PCM and Tc containing) in 3 base glass systems (borosilicate, silicate and boroaluminosilicate) will be undertaken. State of the art characterisation techniques including in-situ measurements during melting will be used to determine the kinetics of volatile evolution and the relationships between processing temperature, volatile Component evolution, waste incorporation rates, redox conditions and glass viscosity. A model relating melt chemistry and physical properties with the kinetics of volatile species evolution will be developed to provide fundamental scientific underpinning to the use of vitrification technologies in the immobilisation of ILW Wastestreas

Results and Impact | I attended the SGT 2017 annual meeting to give an oral presentation on my research outcomes up this date. The audience consisted of academics and members of the glass industry from all levels. The talk was followed by a short Q&A session that prompted discussion around my experimental apparatus used for my research. |

Results and Impact | I attended the SGT 2019 annual meeting to give an oral presentation. The abstract linked below related to an area of work I completed that did not directly link to my research topic but provided an additional method to accurately determine glass composition. Unfortunately the data did not provide the desired results and I presented a presentation I prepared for the ICG2019 conference in June. |
