Investigation of two dimensional nanostructures from molecular self assembly on surfaces.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The combination of molecules on a surface creates new 2D materials with particular predefined structures. The properties of these structures are then investigated using Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM) and Spectroscopy. These results are then used to further fine tune the structure of the 2D surface. The research has applications in nanoscale molecular electronics as it investigates the charge transfer between molecules and has potential applications in information storage. The novel approaches used are high resolution low temperature STM and spectroscopy. These techniques can resolve the internal structures of molecules and can probe the electronic states of the molecules.
