`The development of instrumentation and methodology for the next generation of long baseline neutrino oscillation

Abstract

The development of experimental techniques that will enable long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments to achieve the best possible measurement sensitivity for parameters that currently either poorly known or completely unknown (such as CP-violation in the neutrino sector). The research programme will initially focus on the development of a light injection calibration system for the Hyper-K project. This will involve simulating the light propagation, optimising the design followed by the construction and evaluation of a prototype detector to be installed in Super-K during 2018. The long-term goals of the programme are less well defined, but will include an analysis topic leading to a physics measurement. This is likely to be based on the T2K data set and will be in an area in which the Warwick group is currently active and can provide expert support. A period of Long Term Attachment at the T2K project during a running period will be essential to develop the level of understanding of the detector systems necessary to embark on a data analysis programme.

Title Calibration optics for water Cherenkov detectors 
Description Monitoring of water transparency (e.g. the absorption and scattering levels) is important for water Cherenkov detectors, this can be measured in-situ by injecting light from a bespoke calibration source. An optical system was designed, using simulation and physical testing, to collimate light injected from a connected optical fibre for this purpose.

Impact The design was finalised in spring 2018 and five were installed permanently inside of the Super-Kamiokande neutrino detector in Japan during the summer. Since then, calibration data has been collected and analysed, indicating a successful installation, and further data analysis is being performed by other collaborators. Our calibration devices achieve a tighter light cone than any other optical calibration source in the tank, therefore it is expected that scattering and absorption parameters will be measured to a higher precision. Soon, one of these calibration sources will be integrated into the regular automated calibration routine of the detector. Future deployments in other future water Cherenkov detectors have also been planned.
