Abstract
Solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere coupling is mediated by an electrical current system that carries of order 2 MA and dissipates 1 TW in the atmosphere. The magnetic field-aligned component of this current system is measured by the 66 spacecraft of the Iridium constellation using the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) technique. This project will use AMPERE-derived currents to diagnose the state and driving of the magnetosphere, the relationship to auroral activity, ionospheric conductance, and the occurrence of substorms Novel analysis techniques will be developed to cope with the high volume of data available.
