Organometallic chemistry of well-defined Pd(I) and Pt(I) complexes.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: Chemistry

Building on previous work in the group, the objective of this project is to explore the coordination and organometallic chemistry of well-defined, mononuclear Pd(I) and Pt(I) complexes; especially in the context of applications in challenging bond activation reactions and ultimately with a view of implementation in catalysis.

Description The grant sought to explore organometallic chemistry of well-defined palladium(I) and platinum(I) complexes. Work so far has focused on bond activation reactions using synthesised palladium(I) and platinum(I) compounds. It has led to the publication of work using one such example to mediate the cross coupling of boron and antimony nucleophiles in collaboration with Dr. J. Hooper at Monash University (see publication section). The crucial bond breaking step was determined to proceed using a palladium(I) compound. This work was subsequently highlighted in a review article noting the potential application of this work in organic synthetic chemistry (P. Knochel, S. Graßl, Synfacts, 2018, 14, 1294). This work will be extended during the remainder of the grant to other substrates.
On a personal note, the progress made this far has developed my synthetic skills working using air-sensitive chemicals, including becoming competent using Schlenk line and glovebox techniques as well as the corresponding characterisation procedures.
Exploitation Route Early successes have indicated further potential in bond activation reactions. Future work will focus on exploring such avenues. Long term goals will look to investigate catalytic reactions using these complexes.
