Precision Determination of Parton Distribution Functions for the Large Hadron Collider

Abstract

Context:
Precision determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton will be performed within the global 'MMHT' analysis framework. The understanding of PDFs is an essential ingredient in the modelling of any protonproton collision process that occurs at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the future the LHC will make increasingly precise measurements of the Standard Model of particle physics in order to stress test it and search for possible deviations due to new physics. In addition, the LHC will provide important
information about the non-trivial structure of the Standard Model itself, including of the strong force. In order to pursue this programme the PDFs must be determined to a high level of accuracy and precision.

Aims and Objectives:
Use a range of new experimental datasets for precision extraction of the PDFs, with particular emphasis on LHC data. Develop new theoretical and computational tools to achieve this. Novel research will be published in peerreviewed journals, and presented at conferences.
Novelty of research and methodology
As described above, a high level of precision in the determination of the PDFs will be essential. To achieve this, new theoretical approaches to properly account for all sources of uncertainty (including theoretical), as well as new fitting tools, will be developed.
