Trans experiences of urban space and the implications for planning theory and practice

Lead Research Organisation: University of Brighton
Department Name: Sch of Applied Social Sciences

Abstract

This research will bring a feminist geographical critique into a dialogue with current planning practice in order to enable greater inclusivity currently lacking in the planning process. This research seeks to build on and contribute to the embryonic field of trans (transgender and non-binary) geographies by exploring the gap between the eye of planners and the embodied experiences of trans persons. The aim of this research is to understand how local planning practice in the UK is affected by gender and sexuality, and how trans experiences of urban space can be integrated to create more inclusive policy and practice.
