The dynamics and evolution of a Nova explosion in our Galaxy

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics

Abstract

This project uses unprecedently high cadence optical spectroscopy data of a new Nova
that detonated in our Galaxy in 2015 (which is still being observed). This therefore
presents the first opportunity to study the evolution of a nova from pre-maximum
throughout its different evolutionary stages up to the present day, using the round-theworld
network of telescopes, Global Jet Watch. This project overlaps with all four of the
STFC science challenges, with the most direct of these being "How do stars... develop?"
and "How can we explore and understand the extremes of the Universe?".
