Linking L2 phonological acquisition, attrition and bi-directional transfer in the context of studying abroad

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Faculty of Humanities

Abstract

My proposed research project analyses the effect of studying abroad on learners perception
and production of specific sounds in a foreign language (L2). It will be hypothesised that input type
(instructed vs. naturalistic) is a determinant factor in the acquisition of L2 segmental categories and
that it is by no means, therefore, only age of learning that constrains L2 phonological acquisition.

Description This research analyses why and how pronunciation changes in the native language from learning a foreign language and the mechanisms involved in learning a foreign language sound system (both in terms of perception and production).
Exploitation Route This research shows outcomes of different individuals on Erasmus-funded years abroad in French speaking countries and the environments that most demonstrated linguistic development. This is relevant for pedagogical literature and those interested in maximising output of British students on year abroad schemes.
