Observations of outflows in dust-obscured quasars, and the impact on their host galaxies.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Institute of Astronomy

Abstract

The student will start by exploring the near-infrared spectroscopic properties of a sample of heavily reddened quasars, specifically looking for and quantifying any evidence of outflows. Future work will exploit new and upcoming facilities in other wavebands to more fully understand the properties and population statistics of such quasars, and to derive properties of the associated host galaxies such as the star formation rate and the reddening due to dust in order to compare with unobscured objects.
