The Outer Galaxy - a spectroscopic exploration of higher mass stars
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Hertfordshire
Department Name: School of Physics, Astronomy and Maths
Abstract
The project will establish the use of A-type stars as working probes of the kinematics of the Outer Galactic Disc. The first phase will exploit multi-fibre spectroscopy obtained at the MMT of sightlines at Galactic longitudes 118 and 178 degrees, with the aims of establishing method and testing the rotation law outside the Solar Circle. The second phase will involve forward simulation of data based on Galactic models, in order to prepare for the arrival of Gaia DR2 astrometry (including proper motions).
