Corrosion in oil and gas applications; linking the mechanics of the film to the durability

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leeds
Department Name: Mechanical Engineering

Abstract

When iron carbonate films form on carbon steel they protect surfaces from corrosion. The protection afforded to the surface depends on the tenacity of the film and the ability to resist impact by flows and flows containing solids. In this work we will assess the mechanics of the film and how it adheres to the substrate to build a durability model of the system. The study is experimental but will build on existing models of mechanics of composite layers.
