Digital Pulse Shape Processing for Fission Data from nTOF
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Manchester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy
Abstract
This projects involves the measurement and analysis of fission data using the SpectromeTer for Exotic Fission Fragments (STEFF) at the Neutron Time-of-Flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN. STEFF is a 2E-2v detector system which measures the energies and velocities of both fission fragments in its two arms, and also contains an array of 12 NaI detectors for gamma ray detection. The first part of the project is to assist the set-up and running of the experiment with a 239Pu target. The second part of the project is to develop digital processing algorithms to extract fission parameters from the run data.

PI Contribution | Joined the collaboration as a member for the duration of this grant. Based at CERN as a member of the collaboration's local team from April to December 2018. Assisted the running of experiments in 2018, undertaking shifts and helping with day-to-day running. Participated in research activities that will benefit the wider collaboration. Attended schools and meetings organised by the collaboration. |
Collaborator Contribution | Enabled use of the nTOF facility and experimental areas for conducting a 239Pu(n,f) experiment. Provided access to CERN computing facilities for improving our algorithms' performance. Organised annual collaboration and analysis meetings held at CERN and at other collaboration partners. Arranged the 3rd nTOF Winter School in January 2018 for PhD students. |
Impact | A 239Pu(n,f) experiment was carried out in late 2018 using 51 days of beam time at nTOF experimental area 2 (EAR2). Analysis is ongoing. |
