Modelling regional variations in diet in the UK

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: School of Geography

Abstract

Sub-optimal diet accounts for c 10.8% of the UK burden of premature mortality (Newton et al 2014). Much current research on diet in the UK focusses on individual determinants of dietary choice (Black et al 2012, 2014), on geographical access to positive (healthy) food choices (Cummins 2014), and on the promotion of healthy diets via policy instruments such as 5-a-day and exhortations to reduce salt and sugar intake (McGill et al 2015). Rather less attention has focussed on how diet varies geographically beyond generally negative assessments of the 'Scottish diet' (Masson and Barton 2016). This PhD will use routine secondary data - the National Diet and Nutrition Surveys and the National Food Survey - to explore whether 'regional diets' are also evident within England, assess the extent to which these diets have changed over time taking simultaneous account of individual and contextual social determinants of dietary behaviour, and microsimulate small area estimates that 'localise' variations in diet.

Description This project found no statistically significant differences in fruit and vegetable consumption and overall dietary patterns across the regions of England, but more variation across smaller areas (MSOAs), particularly in and around urban centres within the North of England and Midlands.
Exploitation Route It is expected that the results obtained from this project will contribute to ongoing research by enhancing the understanding of the dietary challenges facing the UK and more specifically, England. The findings presented could help to inform social and health policy as well as more localised interventions (such as voucher schemes and subsidies) aimed at improving the diets of individuals, especially among more disadvantaged groups. Local authorities, other public bodies such as DEFRA and future researchers of public health could stand to benefit from this study.

Results and Impact The University of Southampton Food Environment Special Interest Group (FESIG) was established in the 4th quarter of 2018. The group primarily aims to engage those (Public Health and Medical Practioners, Local Authority, Academics) with an active interest in food environment related research or activities. As an interdisciplinary group which meets quarterly, the primary aim of this group is to discuss critical public health challenges faced at the local and national level, engage with members of local authorities, share possible strategies/solutions and generate research questions and discuss future collaborations and plans for funding applications.

Results and Impact A presentation of my research project was made at the 2019 ENRGHI Conference, June 17-18, 2019 at the University of Exeter. This conference allowed me to share my preliminary findings with other post-graduate researchers/academics (from the UK, USA and Europe) within Health Geography. The presentation sparked questions, discussions and provided me with feedback useful for my project.

Results and Impact A presentation of my research project was made at the 2019 UK Data Service's Health User Conference on July 10, 2019 at the University College of London. Over 60 participants were in attendance. This conference gave me the opportunity to share my preliminary findings with academics, post-graduate students and representatives from NHS Digital, the UK Data Service, NatCen and other data repositories. The presentation not only allowed me to receive invaluable feedback from the audience but sparked several questions and discussions afterwards in-person and on Twitter.
