Art Museums and the production of difference: BME audiences and challenges of inclusivity

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Arts and Cultures

Abstract

This research will interrogate the effectiveness of programming concerned with increasing 'diversity' in art
museums as related to experiences of those who identify as Black Minority and Ethnic (BME). Galleries
with different approaches to increasing their inclusivity towards BME people will provide case studies.
Data from focus groups and interviews will be used to assess institutional policies, aims, objectives and corresponding metrics. This project aims to improve understanding of barriers to art museums for BME
people, inform conversations around programming in order to make them more inclusive, and assist UK
galleries in better representing the ethnic diversity of Britain.
