Jet substructure for the LHC

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The project involves studying the substructure of jets to develop new methods for distinguishing jets originating from top quark decays from those originating from massless partons in QCD. The project will rely mainly on analytical calculations based on QCD resummation techniques to better understand existing methods used by the LHC experiments for tagging top jets. It will seek to use this understanding to develop new methods as well as to further optimise and better inform the use of current methods. The project will also make use of new developments exploiting machine learning methods in order to construct more powerful and more robust discriminants for future applications.
