Towards mid-infrared fibre lasing (Wave Phenomena in Complex Media Thematic Programme)

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Faculty of Engineering

Abstract

Mid-infrared (MIR) fibre lasers are light sources with wide potential for use in the fields of medicine and environmental monitoring.

The aim of this project is to develop both; characterisation methods, and simulation tools, to aid in the design and fabrication of these light sources, while considering material/physical properties, fabrication techniques and advancements in material and design choices.

The proposed research project entails and in-depth study in MIR fibre lasers, spanning the optical characterisation methods and the computational modelling of these devices. Resulting in bespoke optical characterisation methods and closely integrated computer aided simulation tools to aid in their design.
