Reconstructing Wollaton Hall: From Elizabethan Showcase to 21st Century Museum

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: History

Abstract

This CDA project aims to construct a comprehensive history of people associated with, and a narrative
of the physical development of, the heritage site of Wollaton Hall & Park, with enquiry into the early 17th
to mid-20th century period. Other disciplines will be drawn on eg landscape and building archaeology,
architectural history, and aspects of the earlier and wider history of the site & family. To address the set
research questions consultation of a range of primary and secondary sources, and evidence about the
physical material will sought. An initial review, then assessment of the order of consultation to collect
data, will lead to data synthesis and more focussed research questions, leading to the final historical
interpretation. Archival documents (mainly U of Nottm) will be the main source, the project partner will
supply additional data from their period of custodianship (1920s on), enabling the project to extend into
living memory and describe links with the city of Nottingham.
