Crossing the Frame: Western women photojournalists in Vietnam, 1961-1975

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Arts Languages and Cultures

Abstract

This project will use archival research and oral history to uncover the lives of the Western female photojournalists who documented the Vietnam War. The visual aspect of this conflict is well-documented, but the role of gender in the production of images of war has not been fully considered. The thesis will explore how these women navigated the masculinist industries of war and publishing and consider how the burgeoning women's and international peace movements impacted on their lives and work. It will situate these women within the wider historiography on photography, reporting and the American War in Vietnam.
