European Ethnic Economies: Are Ethnic Economies Systemically Embedded in European Economies?

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Politics and International Studies

Abstract

European ethnic economies" - as unisonous as this alliteration might sound, as
dissonant are the organising principles embodied by each of the three terms. "European"
refers to a geographical region, a conglomeration of nation states, each of which claims
sovereignty over a certain territory. Therefore, soil (ius solis) is the central reference
point of this element. "Ethnic" defines the principle of group affiliation on the basis of a
common descent. Thus, ethnicity orders social relations adhering to ius sanguinis.
"Economies" coordinate human conduct through the market mechanism, i.e. through the
adjustment of self-interests of free individuals on the basis of contracts.
