Molecular Minerals of Fe(III)
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Chemistry
Abstract
The project will focus on the discovery and characterisation of new functional molecules containing multiple transition metal centres, particularly those of Fe(III). One major goal is the synthesis of giant, molecular, iron oxide cages analogous to those seen in high oxidation state transition metal polyoxometalates. Such species would have widespread applications from information storage and molecular spintronics, to catalysis and cryogenic refrigeration. Molecular design, innovative synthesis strategy and methods, advanced detection and characterisation techniques will be employed in our world-leading laboratories.
