Abstract

The research focuses on the recreation and sustainment of communities in the urban neighbourhoods of Yogyakarta. Drawing on two pivotal elements in everday life of its inhabitants - monetary interaction and institutionalised social events like arisan - the aim of the research is to understand the political economy of thesecommunities emedied in, on the one hand, state policies, and on the other, global capitalist networks of tourism and production of commodities.
