quantum optics at telecoms wavelengths

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Abstract

This PhD project will mainly consist of optical measurements of little-studied area of quantum dots (QDs) emitting between 1530 nm and 1565 nm. This wavelength range is known as the telecoms C-band where absorption in optical fibres is lowest. The optical measurements will characterise the QDs and aim to demonstrate single photon emission. Such characterisation will assess their suitability as single photon sources in fully secure communication schemes that use quantum cryptography. The student will learn device fabrication techniques to fabricate structures that will allow for emission wavelength tuning and structures that will enhance the emission of the QDs. The project outcome is to demonstrate the QDs as a versatile source of single photons at around 1550 nm compatible with the existing telecommunication infrastructure.
