Abstract

This PhD project will focus on understanding how voluntary participation changes around retirement, how this association has changed over time, and how it might develop in the future.
The key research objectives and specific research questions are:

Understanding the factors that explain volunteering transitions in volunteering participation in older age
What is the relationship between occupation earlier in life and volunteering participation in later life.
Is change in volunteer rate explained by cohort or age effects?
What life events predict a change in volunteering status in older age?
Exploring how changes in employment and retirement policy might affect volunteering participation in older age
What is the impact on volunteering of changing retirement ages?
How do changes in employment and propensities in older age affect volunteering participation?
How might policy makers and voluntary organisations encourage participation amongst older people
