A large statistical study of solar active regions observed in the extreme ultraviolet

Lead Research Organisation: Aberystwyth University
Department Name: Inst of Mathematical and Physical Sci

Abstract

Solar active regions are high-density, hot, and highly magnetic regions of the solar atmosphere associated with sunspots. This project takes several years of data from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory in order to study the properties of a large number of active regions, and changes in these properties over both short (~days) and long (~years) timescales. The main aim of the project is to find statistical relationships between certain properties (e.g. magnetic field variation and cooling/heating) and to interpret these relationships in terms of coronal heating models.
